2019

At the Baden-Württemberg State Media Prize 2019, four students of the Institute for Music Journalism at the the State Center for Music Journalism and Music Informatics at the University of Music Karlsruhe were awarded the annual Baden-Württemberg State Institute for Communications (LFK) Media Prize.

Under the heading of media moments, Baden-Württemberg private radio and television broadcasting contributions and productions were honored on May 13, 2019 at the Stage Palladium Theater Stuttgart before about 1000 guests from the political, business, university and media worlds. Benedikt Wiehle, a 22-year-old student in his fourth semester of the bachelor of music journalism for radio and multimedia program at the University of Music Karlsruhe, won in the Non-commercial Organizations, Universities and Instructional Institutions category with his radio feature, “Who the Hell is Elise? - Beethoven's Great Piano Hit.” The jury deemed his entry “music journalism at its best."

2018

University of Music Karlsruhe Institute for Music Journalism Graduate Awarded Best Moderator at the German Radio Awards 2018

Last year he was merely nominated, this time he won. Phillipp Schmid, a former student at the University of Music Karlsruhe Institute for Music Journalism, won the Best Moderator prize at this year's German Radio Awards, presented before 900 distinguished guests at Schuppen 52, a renovated warehouse in Hamburg. The German Radio Award is the highest honor for the nation’s radio industry. The jury praised his hosting style on Classics Through the Day, a program on the Northern German Broadcasting Culture (NDR) channel.

Philipp Schmid is one of the youngest award winners in this category in recent years. He combines musicality with linguistic astuteness, uniquely incisive humor, and much respect for his morning audience. He is an enthused supporter of young radio talents. He received his journalistic training at the University of Music Karlsruhe Institute for Music Journalism. Professor Jürgen Christ, the institute’s director, is pleased for his former pupil: “This is a major achievement for Philipp and major inspiration for his future career. We are quite proud to have given him the bases for today's success at our institute.”

 

Digital Journalism Prize Awarded to Institute for Music Journalism Students

Katharina Rostan, a graduate of the cultural media technology cooperation course at the University of Music Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, won third prize at this year's DIG-JO digital journalism awards, presented by the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Communication. The four-member jury was impressed by "From Anorexia Into Life," her Pageflow multimedia production. DIG-JO awards annually honor the finest multimedia web articles created at Baden-Württemberg universities. They are intended to integrate creative new forms of journalism, setting trends for the media industry.

Two Graduates of the University of Music Karlsruhe Institute for Music Journalism Honored at the German Radio Awards 2017

At this year's German Radio Awards, attended by 2500 industry professionals in Hamburg’s Elbe Philharmonic Hall, Susann Krieger, former student of the University of Music Karlsruhe Institute for Music Journalism, won the best reporting award. Philipp Schmid was nominated in the Best Moderator category, the sole honoree in the classical music field. The German Radio Awards are the most respected national industry honors.

 

Institute for Music Journalism Student Wins the Baden-Württemberg State Institute for Communications (LFK) Media Prize 2017

Jury Statement: "The feature "Masterpiece of a Madman: Beethoven's First Razumovsky Quartet," is music journalism at its best. The listener absorbs new information things and worthwhile entertainment. Research and narrative sense, as well as technical realization, are all outstanding. It fully exploits the strengths of radio with sound effects, voice, and music. In the jury's opinion, it is a sensationally good radio contribution."

Nick Sternitzke, a University of Music Karlsruhe Institute for Music Journalism student, won one of two equivalent prizes in the Non-commercial Operators, Universities, and Trade Institutions category at this year's Baden-Württemberg State Institute for Communications (LFK) Media Prizes. In the field of radio, he received the coveted award with his "Masterpiece of a Madman: Beethoven's First Razumovsky Quartet." The award ceremony was held on May 15, 2017 as part of a gala in the Apollo Theater in the Stuttgart International Centrum. At the event, five radio and television categories were recognized for contributions noteworthy for journalistic quality, creativity, and originality as well as approach oriented to target groups.

The LFK Media Prizes are the most significant private broadcasting awards in Baden-Württemberg. This is the 26th time the awards are presented, distributing a total of 30,000 euros.

Nena Wagner and Claudia Thumm Nominated for the LFK Media Prize 2014

Bachelor of arts program student Nena Melanie Wagner reports on the radio project “Jekasi - Everyone Can Sing” by the South African singer Sonja Oellermann. This project aims to anchor singing more firmly in everyday school life and promote social integration of foreign school children through multilingual songs. It can be heard on the homepage of the Young People’s Cultural Channel.

The graduate Claudia Thumm created as part of her master's thesis a 37-minute film, “The Piano Sounds Blue: Synesthesia - When Sounds Become Colors and Shapes.” The documentary follows three synesthetes in their everyday life, explaining the medical background of synesthesia.
