Music Theory

What is unique about a work of musical art, and which elements compose its special character? What characterizes the music of different eras until the present day? How may we learn to hear music in its basic elements of melody, harmony and rhythm or read it from the page?

Music theory teaches and researches questions like these. It conveys musical handicraft basics in different disciplines, starting from the oldest ones handed down across generations, to the very latest music. It also brings analytical skills to the table so that the artworks may be properly understood and performed.

The artistic practice of composing, improvising, and performing music is mutually interdependent with scientifically established music theory. In this way, different methods and perspectives are juxtaposed with music. This combination of musical practice and reflection provides fundamental and rewarding educational experiences at the University of Music Karlsruhe.
