BA / MA Teaching Posts at Grammar Schools (School Music)

The Study Course in Arts Teaching of Music in High Schools (School Music) is one of the most versatile courses available at a music college. Students are given an extremely far-reaching, and at the same time profound, musical education based upon four equivalent fundamentals: artistic, practical artistic, musicological, and music pedagogical bases.

At the University of Music Karlsruhe, the class size is small, with an average of from six to seven students per semester, making possible intensive support and optimal training and encouragement. Students receive instruction in at least one instrument with piano as a required subject. In addition, there are courses in singing; voice studies; vocal science; choir and orchestral conducting; practical piano playing; music theory; ear training; musicology; music pedagogy and didactics; and jazz and popular music. In addition, all students also participate in university ensembles, including the university choir, school music orchestra, and big band.

  • Trumpet, Trombone, Horn, Tuba

  • Music theory (as a major subject only in the MA)
  • Orchestral and choral conducting (as a special subject only in the MA)

Parallel to musical studies, a scientific subject is concentrated upon at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) or the Heidelberg University, while a complementary course in educational science is completed. There are also orientation internships and practical semesters at high schools. After successfully completing studies, students may begin start a traineeship, which is then completed with the state examination. By the end of training, graduates have highly extensive abilities, making them outstanding job candidates for high schools and other musical activities.
