Course Concept for the Course in Opera Singing (BA / MA / SO)

At the Institute for Music Theater (IMT), qualified music theater performers are trained for today's music theater.

The IMT is one of the few training centers in Germany to offer an undergraduate course (a stage course starting in the first semester) for aspiring music theater performers. The students receive excellent vocal training from internationally renowned professors as well as a range of course subjects, including musical part studies, scenic lessons, acting training, improvisation, dance, speech training, stage fighting, audition training, and the history and aesthetics of music theater. Outstanding artist personalities such as Kammersängerin Professor Júlia Várady Fischer-Dieskau and regular master classes with internationally renowned artists also provide important motivation.

The in-depth instruction in the eight-semester bachelor’s degree and four-semester master's degree and the four-semester opera soloist diploma course are complemented by major music theater productions with orchestras, Kids@Opera children's opera productions, experimental music theater, and regular workshop evenings in which students at different stages of training get onstage experience in front of audiences.

Participation in the Institute's music theater productions is an important part of training. Under professional conditions, students are given the opportunity to test themselves in public performance. The high quality of the performances on the MUT stage in the Wolfgang Rihm Forum means that a variety of collaborations are possible, such as with the Baden-Baden Festival Hall, Schwetzingen Festival, Ludwigsburg Castle Festival and Baden State Theater Karlsruhe.

A joint international opera studio with the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, reserved exclusively for IMT students, also offers advanced students the opportunity to be involved in day-to-day work of a first-class theater and establish contacts at an early stage, which often enables students to enter professional theater life before graduation.
