Master's Degree in Musicology on Interpretation and Mediation of Music

The Master's Degree in Musicology on Interpretation and Mediation of Music is still another study option. The course starts in the winter semester.

The Master's Degree in Musicology on Interpretation and Mediation of Music pursues two closely linked goals (see Study – Master of Arts Curriculum): Building upon technical foundations acquired in a preliminary bachelor's degree course, knowledge of music-historical processes and musicological methods should be become enhanced. Of particular importance is the area of performance practice and interpretation research, which the University of Music Karlsruhe interprets as referring to all epochs and styles of music history up to the present day. In addition to specializing in subject-specific topics as well as questions and methods, a second goal is to acquire skills in teaching music to the public, preparing graduates of the degree program for careers in this area.

The immediate vicinity of artistic subjects expected at a university of music, close connection to music informatics, collaboration with the Max Reger Institute, and possible internships at the Baden State Theater, Baden-Baden Festival Hall, or other institutions create a teaching and learning environment in which scientific work and practical experience complement each other meaningfully.

The master’s degree course consists of four semesters of study. It is completed with a written master's thesis and oral exam.

Admission requirements are a completed course of study in a bachelor of arts course with a major in musicology, a combined subject in music informatics/ musicology or a course in arts teaching (School Music). Admission is granted after an interview.

Graduates of the degree program have a wide range of different career areas available, including scientific activities in archives, libraries, digital music editions, or independent research institutions as well as employment with music publishers or the diverse areas of music education and organization of cultural institutions.
