In 1991, the ComputerStudio, now called SAM · ComputerStudio (Studio for the Artistic Application of Music and Media Technology · ComputerStudio), was founded at the Karlsruhe University of Music and quickly assumed the role of "innovation motor" at the still young University of Music. Under its leadership, audio, music and media technology, as well as computer and network technology, were brought to the university. With the introduction of these technologies into the everyday life of the university, the involvement of performers and composers with computer-aided audio and music technology, as well as the then "new media", became a natural part of teaching and music practice at the Karlsruhe University of Music. Thus, the university assumed a leading role among the art colleges in Baden-Württemberg in the field of applied music technology and music informatics.

With the chair of music informatics, the foundation of the Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology, IMWI for short, was made possible out of the SAM · ComputerStudio together with the Department of Musicology. Thus, an additional, independent study program "Music Informatics" was born, which, together with the activities and possibilities of the SAM · ComputerStudio, represents another unique study program, which since then has been an important area of research and teaching at the Karlsruhe University of Music.

Since 2019, Rainer Lorenz, who has helped to establish the SAM · ComputerStudio since the beginning, has been entrusted with the management of the studio.
